Sayonara, Sanjaya

Well, Sanjaya, you kept "American Idol" interesting, lasting far longer than anyone with your appalling lack of talent probably should have. But apparently, the voting of prepubescent girls and Howard Stern fans only goes so far.

Last week, I posted about how the skewed voting totals of Sanjaya Malakar, which knocked out far more worthy competitors, could have posed a serious problem to "AI's" future had wild-maned teen with the big grin and lacking voice had gone on to win the whole competition. Had he won, if the vote had been just one big joke thanks to Web sites like votefortheworst.com, what kind of future did that leave for the show?

But, apparently Fox's deal with the devil to have the No. 1 rated show on TV includes a Sanjaya clause, and the show is left with a half-dozen competitors of varying degrees of talent who have a better shot at a legitimate musical career.

I've already said in this blog I really don't watch much "AI," though whenever I flip through the channels, I always seem to manage to catch Sanjaya pulverising a song from an act I like, such as the Kinks, or Bonnie Raitt this week. So, for me at least, karma won out.

But Sanjaya's remarkable run to get as far as he did created a lot of buzz for "AI," and his departure may mean the show becomes a little more ordinary.

Maggie Large can give you much better insight on the remaining "AI" competitors on her music blog, Amped.

THURSDAY'S BEST BETS: In a show based on Superman, it's Wonder Woman who takes the spotlight on tonight's "Smallville." (CW, 8 p.m.) Well, sort of. Lynda Carter, TV's "Wonder Woman" from back in the 1970s, guest stars tonight as Chloe's (Allison Mack) mom, who has spent the previous several years in a mental ward. Speaking of Wonder Woman and mental illness, did anyone ever catch the Wonder Woman sketch on the old "Dr. Katz" cartoon on Comedy Central years ago? I'm sure it's on the Web somewhere, and worth a look.

A new "Supernatural" (CW, 9 p.m.) follows as the Winchester boys take a more lighthearted turn tonight on a movie set.

ABC rolls out a new night, featuring the return of "Ugly Betty" at 8 p.m., followed by "Grey's Anatomy" at 9 p.m. A new episode of "October Road," the Sanjaya of TV programs, airs at 10 p.m.

NBC is all new, with the exception of "The Office" at 8:30 p.m. CBS has new installments of "Survivor" and "Shark," sandwiching a rerun of "CSI."

Re yesterday's article, I found "Hustle" very disappointing.
It was dull and the plot was almost stupid. I don't know if it was the "American Influence"

I personally like "Hustle," but I can see where hotspur is coming from. I know a lot of people that didn't watch the British version of "The Office" until they had been watching Steve Carrell and company for awhile, and were turned off due to the different style of humor. I personally love shows like "Coupling," "MI:5," and "Hustle," but they are not for all Americans I guess.

Lynda Carter on "Smallville" bugs the hell out of me and reeks of trying too hard. With something as brilliant as "Heroes" on now, the problems with "Smallville" are more present than ever. This has been probably the worst season of the show yet. They are trying to cram way too much in; Lex/Lana wedding, Phantom Zone creatures, and the introduction to the JLA. One of these storylines could have been written around for an entire season; all three is pretty much overkill. I've given this underperformer a lot more years than I've ever given just about any show I only had passing interest in. Whether or not it gets renewed, I think this might be my last.

I'm all for "Supernatural" getting renewed though. While they don't delve too much below the surface, the show provides a consistently entertaining hour week in and week out. More adventures from the brothers would not be a bad thing at all.

I haven't had a chance to catch Hustle yet, I'll have to do it this weekend.

I don't think necessarily that Lynda Carter was horrible stunt casting. She was perfectly fine in the episode, and it isn't like they threw a whole bunch of Wonder Woman nods in there.

Smallville could use a little more focus. I've never been much of a Lana fan, so the Lex-Lana plot hasn't done much for me. (Especially with the fabulous Erica Durance as Lois Lane, we ought to see much more of her; she's been absent too much this season).

I like the Phantom Zone stuff, because Clark needs someone else to fight besides meteor freaks, and it's given him a lot more to do. The JLA stuff was also pretty good, and there is at least the possibility that it could lead into a spinoff.

Supernatural was phenomenal last night, truly one of their cleverest outings yet. I liked the "Grindhouse" aspect of showing the trailer for the faux movie that the episode had been built around.

(this is in zodin2008)

I still enjoy "Smallville" but in thinking of this season as a whole, I just haven't enjoyed it as much. I really haven't enjoyed Lex-Lana that much either and I couldn't agree more: MORE ERICA DURANCE.

It's ironic that Durance, a relative no-name, is a fantastic Lois while the more well known Kate Bosworth was truly horrible and unwatchable as the film version in last summer's, "Superman Returns".

As for Lynda Carter, I thought she was fine...she's a solid actress and still looks fantastic after all these years, and natural too.

Zod again...

Let me add that I don't give two sh--s about Sanjaya and American Idol. Just wish both would go away forever.

I enjoyed Lynda Carter as well. She does look great.

I finally saw Hustle over the weekend. While not the strongest episode of the series and definitely missing Adrian Lester, I thought it a solid effort.
