Happy 2008 (To Everyone But The Fox Commentators)

Hope everyone had a good New Year's. I sure did, what with the Dogs' big win over Hawaii and all.

But, holy crap, Fox doesn't need to be doing any more college football games. Between the start of the game being delayed until nearly 9 p.m. EST and the god-awful commentators, it nearly spoiled what was a great UGA win.

I mean, there is something wrong when a college game is ending after 1 a.m. And there is something wrong when the commentators criticize the backups on Georgia trying to make plays, as if they are running up the score. What, the Dogs are supposed to lay down on the job just because Hawaii can't make a play on either side of the ball? I realize that it must have been an awfully difficult job to comment on a game that was so one-sided, but that doesn't mean you have be one-sided for the other team in your comments.

WEDNESDAY'S BEST BETS: The bowl season continues tonight with the Fiesta Bowl, as Oklahoma battles West Virginia (Fox, 8 p.m.) Let's hope the Fox guys are a bit more balanced.

If football isn't your thing, you may want to check out "Pioneers of TV" (PBS, 8 p.m.), which takes a look at the history of TV. Tonight's installment deals with some of the great comics from TV's history.

It was one of the first times I ever had to watch a football game with the "mute" button on.

Thom Brenneman was not only biased and mean spirited (so was his partner, Charles Davis, but in comparison, Davis came off like he was Mark Richt) but he sounded like an 'angry drunk who's just found out his girlfriend left him' by the 4th quarter.

I think his spewing at Georgia was more about the fact that it was a 1 -sided game with absolutely no introgue whatsoever. He also felt (probably correctly) that the game would have gotten better ratings with the Hawaii offense in full go mode and Hawaii winning a close one.

(obviously, as a Georgia fan, I am thrilled with last night's result).

But Brenneman shoudln't have taken his bitter disappointment that this wasn't Oklahoma-Boise Part II out on Georgia. Life can't all be upsets and sometimes, Goliath has no problem disptaching a hula dancing David.

The fact remains, the BCS gets what they deserve. They put a bunch of BCS games together that will all likely be blowouts (I suspect Oklahoma and Virginia tech to win easily and LSU winning easily on Monday) rather than getting closer, more exciting match-ups like Georgia-USC, which would have been the best game of 2008.

The fact that the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl were giant, boring, flops, makes me extremely happy because it only emboldens those of us in the majority who want to see a tournament finally.

I suspect you got bad grades in English class, or is it you expected to get bad grades?

Actually, sports writing style is "Dogs" and not "Dawgs," which is strictly for fans of the team. In the past 18 years or so I've covered Georgia, it's always been "Dogs."

And my grades in English were perfectly fine, thank you much. I also learned how to not post the same comment over and over.
